June 2026 Utilization Report

Highlights: DC hospitals experienced generally stable patient volumes through June 2026, with most service lines remaining within normal ranges. Acute care admissions, specialty care admissions, and emergency department visits all remained relatively steady over the past 15 months, while observation admissions continued to run at elevated levels compared with earlier in the year. Behavioral health indicators showed mixed performance, with psychiatric admissions remaining stable but civil commitment admissions declining during June 2026 (see Fig. 1 below). Newborn admissions continue to increase after their lowest volumes in April 2026 as shown in Table 12 of the report. Looking at occupancy data, ICU occupancy varied significantly by hospital, with some facilities operating near full capacity while others maintained substantially lower occupancy levels as depicted on page 16 of the report.
