The DCHA member hospitals understand pain relief is important when someone is hurt. But, the best way to provide pain relief is complex. Pain medications that are not used correctly can cause serious problems and are a major cause of accidental death.

Our doctors will use their best judgement when treating your pain, and will strive to provide safe and appropriate options.

It is important to note that each patient’s medical condition, when they present to the Emergency Department (ED), is unique. These safety recommendations are not intended to interfere with or supersede the professional medical judgment of the treating clinician to determine the right course of treatment – including prescribing practices.

The goal of the Opioid Initiative is to reduce use, misuse, and related deaths in the District of Columbia.
