Patient Safety & Quality Poster Competition is OPEN UNTIL JULY 7, 2023
The Patient Safety & Quality Poster Competition is organized to encourage hospitals and health care providers to present their original work. All winning abstracts will be presented during the annual Patient Safety & Quality Summit on November 14, 2023.
Purpose: The purpose of the competition is to emphasize quality improvement methodology, provide a venue to share innovative and effective educational programs, showcase unique community projects, and encourage networking among medical peers with similar interests.
Theme: Managing Change: Adapting Safety and Quality Initiatives in an Environment of Competing Priorities
Cash Awards: $1,000 for 3 Bronze Winners; $2,000 for 2 Silver Winners; and $3,000 for 1 Gold Winner

Poster Details
A poster is a visual guide that summarizes information or research concisely and attractively to help publicize it and generate discussion. The poster is typically a mixture of a brief text with tables, graphs, pictures, and other presentation formats.
- The poster must be submitted as a PDF
- Size should be scaled to 36 x 24 for printing
- Once printed, posters should be able to be displayed on an easel (easels will be provided)
- Poster submitters are not required to print their posters until after they are notified regarding whether they will be presenting at the Summit
- The word count should not exceed 800 words
- Should be readable from about 10 feet away
- The poster should guide the reviewer through the abstract
- The poster should include references (approx. 3-6 references)
Poster should include how Quality Improvement was incorporated into the theme of Managing Change: Adapting Safety and Quality Initiatives in an Environment of Competing Priorities.
The Summit will include the following education tracks:
- Incorporating Quality Improvement in Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion (internal practices, patient outcomes)
- Workforce Support (preventing harm to staff, safe culture)
- Infection Prevention (addressing HAIs, COVID response)
- Maternal Health (maternal morbidity and mortality, best practices for AIM bundle)
Abstract Instructions
The abstract is a stand-alone summary that clearly and succinctly conveys the essential information of a project or study. For this abstract the focus is to be on a quality or safety topic that uses a performance improvement methodology.
- The abstract is not to exceed 250 words
- Use single spacing throughout and indent the paragraphs
- Use a 10-point Arial font with one-inch margins
- Do not give references in the abstract
- Clarity of expression will be considered
- If using abbreviations, place them in parentheses after the full word the first time it appears
- Use the following naming convention when submitting your abstract: Facility Abbreviation_2023_title or topic of project date; Example: DCHA_2023_Safety Standards_6-7-23
- Abstracts should not include endorsements, sponsors, brand names or bias toward a product or service
Judging Criteria
Relevance to the Summit theme Managing Change: Adapting Safety and Quality Initiatives in an Environment of Competing Priorities with a focus on patient safety or quality.
- Innovation and Replicability
- Use of innovative techniques
- Ability to be adopted by others
- Performance Improvement
- Identification and improvement of processes or outcomes
- Use of performance improvement methodologies [e.g., PDCA, lean, six sigma]
- Demonstrated Impact
- Measurable improvement to patient safety or quality
- Addresses positive outcome or lessons learned
- Graphic Display of Data
- Creative use of visual data (fonts, headings, colors, and white space)
- Table and graphic clearly tell a story or inform the reader
- Teams will not be evaluated by reviewers from their own hospital or health system
- All scores are final and confidential; DCHA does not provide individual feedback from reviewers or release the identity of the review group
- Award winners will present at the Summit. One award winner per poster will be provided with a conference registration
Submission Checklist & Other Information
- A Google Form will be used for submissions. All submissions must include: completed abstract form, completed posters, completed conflict of interest form for all team members and leaders of group; and bios for all team members and leaders of group.
- Note that submission via the Google form will require that you use a Gmail account to access the form. However, you can choose which email account that will receive a copy of your responses will be sent to the email address you provide below.
- The Google form allows you to edit your submission until the deadline.
- A maximum of three submissions per hospital will be accepted for judging.
Visuals & Text
- Present numerical data in the form of graphs, rather than words or tables (graphs make trends in the data much more evident). If data must be presented in table form, keep it simple.
- Visuals should be simple and bold.
- Avoid acronyms and extensive mathematical notations as much as possible.
- Avoid submitting compactly packed, high word-count posters.
- Use bright colors to enhance the detail.
- Besides your project, the text could also include future research plans or questions.
