2020

The C4-1 thoracic IMC unit was awarded the Silver Level Beacon Award. The Beacon Award is presented annually by the American Association of Critical Care Nurses. It is a measure of an inpatient unit’s capacity to work as a team to provide the highest level of care to critically ill patients. MGUH is the only hospital in the Washington Metropolitan area with five Beacon Awards, and the Hospital joins only 21 hospitals across the country with five or more Beacon Award units.

2019

Named one of the 2019 “100 Great Hospitals in America” by Becker’s Healthcare. This honor recognizes MGUH for its excellence in clinical care, patient outcomes, and staff and physician satisfaction, as well as achieving advanced accreditation and certification in several specialties.
The C4-2 medical intensive care unit and the C4-3 surgical intensive care unit were awarded the Gold Level Beacon Award for the fourth time! The Beacon Award is presented annually by the American Association of Critical Care Nurses. It is a measure of an inpatient unit’s capacity to work as a team to provide the highest level of care to critically ill patients.
The National Cancer Institute re-designated the Georgetown Lombardi Comprehensive Cancer Center as a comprehensive cancer center. The Lombardi CCC is the only NCI-designated cancer center in Washington, DC.
MedStar Georgetown recently became one of the first in the nation to earn the Program of Distinction designation from the Association for Professionals in Infection Control and Epidemiology (APIC). This designation recognizes the Hospital’s commitment to infection prevention and control practice in the following nine (9) areas:

The C4-3 Surgical Intensive Care Unit (SICU) earned the Gold Beacon Award, presented annually by the American Association of Critical Care Nurses (AACN), recognizing an inpatient unit’s capacity to work as a team to provide the highest level of care to critically ill patients.

MedStar Georgetown was ranked the #1 regional hospital by U.S. News and World Report for the third year in a row. The hospital earned its ranking among other hospitals in D.C., the Maryland suburbs and Northern Virginia. U.S. News and World Report also recognized the hospital for excellence in nine types of care.
MedStar Georgetown was recently ranked in the national Vizient database as #1 in the nation for the prevention of central line-acquired bloodstream infections (CLABSI) and the incidence of iatrogenic pneumothorax (when a patient suffers a lung injury due to medical care in the hospital). These #1 rankings are based on recently released data from the 4th quarter of 2017. Vizient is a national database that contains multiple patient care measures and is populated by hundreds of participating hospitals throughout the country.
In calendar year 2017, the MedStar Georgetown Transplant Institute performed 20 bowel transplants, which makes MGTI #1 in the country for program volume during a time that saw a decreasing overall volume. This equates to MGTI performing nearly 20 percent of all intestine transplants in the country. MGTI patient outcomes were as good as, or better, than any of the leading centers: Adult intestinal transplant one-year survival rate of 80.97% compared to 75.68% nationally; and, Pediatric intestinal transplant one-year survival rate of 91.71% compared to 76.18% nationally.
MedStar Georgetown University opened its Proton Therapy Center, offering the latest in cancer treatment to adults and children. MedStar Georgetown is the first and only site to offer proton therapy in the Washington, DC metropolitan area – and the only one in the world to offer the latest, most precise form of proton therapy with HYPERSCAN™.

2017

MedStar Georgetown’s C6-2 inpatient medical/surgical unit became the first hospital in D.C. and the 22nd in the United States to receive the PRISM Award from the Academy of Medical-Surgical Nurses and the Medical-Surgical Nursing Certification Board. This award recognizes medical/surgical units that consistently demonstrate exceptional nursing practice, effective leadership, a healthy practice environment and evidence-based, positive clinical outcomes.
MedStar Georgetown was ranked the #1 regional hospital by U.S. News and World Report for the second year in a row. The hospital earned its ranking among other hospitals in D.C., the Maryland suburbs and Northern Virginia. U.S. News and World Report also recognized the hospital for excellence in eight types of care.
MedStar Georgetown University Hospital was awarded Platinum status in the Workplace Partnership for Life Program, part of the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services’ Hospital Campaign. This program recognizes and celebrates hospitals across the country that display outstanding efforts and achievements in public education and advocacy surrounding the importance of organ, eye, and tissue donation.
MedStar Georgetown won two awards at the biennial Synergy Symposium, hosted by the Washington Regional Transplant Community. MedStar Georgetown University Hospital won the WRTC Silver Medal of Honor Award, which recognizes excellence in organ donor recruitment rates. MedStar Georgetown’s Chief of Pediatric Critical Care Dr. Santa Johnston won the Best Practice Award for her dedication to making sure all families are given the chance to make informed decisions regarding donation.
MGUH became the first hospital in the United States to earn certification in Patient Blood Management from the Joint Commission and the AABB (formerly known as the American Association of Blood Banks).
The MGUH Hyperbaric Medicine Program became the first in D.C. to earn accreditation from the Undersea and Hyperbaric Medical Society.
MGUH was redesignated as a Huntington’s Disease Center of Excellence by the Huntington’s Disease Society of America.
MedStar Georgetown University Hospital earned The Joint Commission’s Gold Seal of Approval^®and the American Heart Association/American Stroke Association’s Heart-Check mark for Advanced Certification for Comprehensive Stroke Centers. MedStar Georgetown is one of an elite group of healthcare organizations in the United States to have earned this certification in highly-specialized stroke care.
MedStar Georgetown’s Stem Cell Transplant and Cellular Immunotherapy Program earned internationally-recognized accreditation by the Foundation for the Accreditation of Cellular Therapy (FACT) to now provide allogeneic and autologous transplantation. In addition, the program earned accreditation to provide cell-based immunotherapies, such as the rapidly developing treatments using autologous CAR T-cells in the treatment of lymphoma, leukemia, and multiple myeloma. MedStar Georgetown has the only FACT-accredited adult stem cell and cellular immunotherapy program in the metropolitan Washington, D.C. area.

2016

Three MedStar Georgetown inpatient units received the prestigious Beacon Award for Excellence in Nursing. The Beacon Award, presented annually by the American Association of Critical Care Nurses (AACN), is a measure of an inpatient unit’s capacity to work as a team to provide the highest level of care to critically ill patients.
MGUH was ranked #1 by U.S. News and World Report in the Washington region region that includes DC, the Maryland suburbs and Northern Virginia. MedStar Georgetown was also ranked #48 nationally for Diabetes and Endocrinology.
MGUH was recognized as a Pioneer in Quality Expert Contributor by Joint Commission. Pioneers in Quality™ is a Joint Commission program developed to assist hospitals with their journey toward the adoption and use of electronic clinical quality measures (eCQMs). MGUH is recognized for helping to advance the evolution and utilization of eCQMs through such contributions as presenting at a Pioneers in Quality™ webinar or participating in eCQM development during 2016.
MGUH was designated by NICHE (Nurses Improving Care for Healthsystem Elders), the premiere nurse-driven mechanism through which hospitals foster improved care of older patients, as a Level 3 Senior Friendly NICHE hospital for the Hospital’s focus on geriatric patient care.
The Huntington’s Disease Society of America and its Center Programs and Education Advisory Committee designated MedStar Georgetown’s Huntington’s Disease clinic as a Level 2 HDSA Center of Excellence.
