The D.C. Chapter of the Association of Pro Bono Counsel (APBCo) and the Legal Aid Society want to partner with hospitals and other stakeholders in the District to remove unnecessary obstacles while improving access to services for those experiencing financial and medical hardships. Representatives from each organization met this week at DCHA and presented the Social Security Project for Effective and Efficient Determinations (SPEED), a program designed to coordinate and deliver local pro bono legal services for people living in poverty.
The D.C. Chapter of APBCo decided to focus their efforts on the challenges that applicants and their advocates encounter during the Social Security Disability Insurance (SSDI) and Supplemental Security Income (SSI) application process. The scope of the D.C. SPEED project includes individual representation and systemic advocacy and to ensure faster, more accurate Social Security Administration determinations.
